“When we had to find homes for aged parents 250 miles away from us (and the first time an emergency nursing bed on Christmas Eve) it was incredibly difficult to judge (apart from those which smelled) and extremely stressful.
We didn’t mind paying but had no easy way of judging whether this would provide compassionate care for our family”
A crisis has happened either unexpectedly or, more likely, has built up over a period of time. Your loved one has kept falling, a series of illnesses have got worse etc.....and the situation has reached breaking point.
There is significant stress for everyone....your loved one, you and all your family.
Naturally, everyone wants to stay at home but that is no longer an option. That possibility has been tried and exhausted.
A care home is now the only solution.....but how do you find a quality care home?
You will be feeling many things – guilt, regret, stress, anxiety, confusion.
Navigating your way around the care system for the uninitiated is complex. At a difficult time when emotions are running high, you need assistance.
You need quality independent information as you start your search to find a care home.
Harvey Zemmel, a care home expert, has written ‘Secrets Revealed : How to Find a Quality Care Home’.
It can now be downloaded for free.
Does the care home pass or fail the ‘cigarette butt’ test?
The staff who smoke will come outside the front door to smoke a cigarette but they will leave their cigarette butt ends outside the front door and not clear the mess.
If it’s a mess outside, what is it going to be like inside?
Is the care home run for the benefit of the staff or residents?
The actual thought that the home is possibly run for the benefit of the staff rather than the residents is a shocking one....but these homes do exist.
If the staff show signs of ‘I can’t be bothered’ or ‘It’s too much trouble’...move on...
Does the care home pass or fail the ‘bingo’ test?
Each home will claim they offer a range of activities.
When you press the home for more information and conduct a little research you find to your horror, they play bingo once a week! This does not constitute activities to enrich the soul.
A truly independent and comprehensive report, undertaken by Harvey Zemmel to give you real peace of mind is available.
Be aware that some businesses claim to be ‘independent’ but they are not as they get paid a commission by the care home.
In addition, assistance with any form filling that is required will be given.
“My mum was being half starved in the home, not properly looked after, no entertainment – apart from a musical CD being played in the mornings, if she was lucky and for this she was being charged £725 per week.
These owners are ripping off the elderly and should be shot in my opinion along with manageress’s who lie through their teeth and can get away with it.
All this drove me to attempting suicide as I felt I’d failed my mum so much.”
